How I Raised Several Generations of Fire Stick
in Couple Years

My dear friends, I would like to share with you this great experience I am going through right now raising multiple generations of the same Fire Stick over and over again in my pots. Here in Arizona it is pretty common to grow this beautiful evergreen plant which turns red and orange under warm winter sun. My journey started a while ago when I was settling down and thinking the overall concept of the backyard which was absolutely naked back those days.
And guess what – I had a starter package: which was a planter with a Fire Stick in it!:) But back those days my focus was on creating a blooming oasis of a deserty look low maintenance backyard. So I was paying little attention to my friend Fire Stick, watering it from time to time and supporting it’s slow development. And at some point it just took off, and left me no choice but buying more and more planters and transplanting parts of my Fire Stick which, I guess, has a secret plan to take over humanity now…
I took the challenge and decided to bring it to a new level – I thought that I will grow not just bushy version of a Fire Stick in a pot, but will turn it into a tree! I was curious, whether it can outgrow my height (I am 5’11”), and taking into consideration this Firestick’s tempo, – how long it will take to turn it into a tree.
And Vuala! – couple years later I have two trees, the first one is about 6’10” now and the other one is about 5”11 as myself. I have couple superbushy versions, and I have just transplanted couple more stems from the first and the second trees into (five!) other planters just about a month ago and they already growing with new greenery!
So now I am truly obsessed with this growth – it feels so easy, quick, low maintenance, but gives so much fulfilment and joy! And turns out to be impressively pretty.
I decided to share this achievement with you and other idea came to my mind – Let’s make it a challenge! – I am going to grow at least three more trees in my planters for the next year or so and will share my progress with you. I invite you to join the challenge and grow your Fire Stick in your back yard.
Here is a thing though – it has to be in a planter, so that everyone is under equal terms. In my case when I decided to cultivate my first tree, I bought a really large planter at Lowe’s and transplanted my whole bush into the larger planter. I put it in a spot where the planter is in the shade for at least 2PM (and I have a west backyard – so this was a separate challenge!). I watered it with a hose twice a day in the morning around 6-7AM and in the evening around 6.30-7PM. I started around October… And when the bush showed me a strong stem among the others, I started to cultivate this exact stem by trimming the others from time to time. In a week or so, I got to one bushy stem, which I cultivate till today. And this is my first tree.
I do believe, that the planter should be wide and tall. Below I am linking my planters, which I love! I am also linking below soil that I am using and couple more accessories. These guys do get heavy, so to move them around I recommend to put them on wheels right away. Linked below too. I now regret that I did not put them on wheels from the beginning, but I will!
